Gladys

Educational Guardian and Host family

About Me

Based in Bournemouth, in the south-west of England, Gladys has a lovely family and a small dog. She enjoys running and being out in nature, currently training to participate in two half marathons and the renowned London Marathon in April 2025. Gladys, is working towards the goal of raising funds for OXFAM. She also find happiness from family gatherings, painting, travelling, and visiting museums.

Gladys has a degree in Psychology and currently work as an exam invigilator at a private school for UK National Secondary School and Sixth Form examinations. In addition to this, she has experience of working in the English as a Second Language School sector and has also been a homestay host for many years, collaborating with young students from around the world.

With two daughters and extensive experience of working with children, Gladys began hosting. Gladys says, “I really enjoy  guiding students to achieve their goals and understand the importance of having a reliable figure when you are far from home.”

For Gladys, being a local guardian entails carrying out some parental responsibilities that other jobs do not involve. Tasks have involved things such as arranging doctor’s appointments, accompanying students on hospital visits, and maintaining contact with the school and host families to ensure a child’s wellbeing.

Gladys knows it can be challenging for younger children to study away from their parents. In her experience, she feels providing ample information and online contact before their departure, including online meetings with parents, children, and agents, is crucial. For her clear communication is essential. She is sure to offer support to ease students adapting into life in the UK by maintaining regular contact during term time and communicating effectively with the school and host families.
